Red Lodge’s Neighborhood Wine Shop, Cheese & Specialty Food Market

Locally owned by Steve & Kim Haman

Merchants of the Delectable

Babcock & Miles Market is a locally owned neighborhood wine shop, cheese shop, and specialty food market in downtown Red Lodge, Montana. Established in 2008 and owned by Red Lodge locals Steve and Kim Haman since 2016, the Market specializes in Somm-selected wines, more than 70 cheeses, charcuterie, proteins, specialty foods, gifts, and personal wine recommendations.

The team at Babcock & Miles has been helping Red Lodge locals and visitors find something delicious since 2008.

Tucked inside the little yellow house just off Broadway, our Market is Red Lodge’s neighborhood wine shop and specialty food market—a place to discover a great bottle, find the cheese to go with it, track down an ingredient you can’t find anywhere else, put together something wonderful for dinner, or simply ask, “What should I take home?”

Locals Steve & Kim Haman have owned Babcock & Miles since 2016, building on the Market’s original spirit while making it distinctly their own: thoughtful, knowledgeable, welcoming, occasionally irreverent and always very serious about good things to eat and drink.

Around here, we call ourselves Merchants of the Delectable.

We mean it.

Wine Is Where We Begin

Walk into Babcock & Miles looking for a bottle, and you won’t be asked to prove how much you know about wine.

You might know the producer, vintage, and vineyard.

You might know you like “that red we had here last summer.”

You might know you’re having steak.

Or that you have $25.

All perfectly useful information.

Our wine selection spans regions, styles, producers, and price points from around the world, with bottles chosen because there is something worth discovering inside them—not simply because they happen to be available.

Known around Red Lodge as “Somm Steve,” proprietor Steve Haman holds Level One certification from the Court of Master Sommeliers and has spent years studying not only what is in the bottle, but who made it, where it came from, and why it tastes the way it does.

That knowledge matters.

But what matters even more is being able to use it to help someone find a wine they’ll actually enjoy.

Tell us what you like, what you’re eating, what you’re celebrating, or what you’d like to spend. We’ll take it from there.

Curated Before “Curated” Was Everywhere

We admit it: we love the word curated.

But around Babcock & Miles, it has to earn its keep.

For years, our approach has been to seek out products with a point of view, a sense of place, exceptional ingredients, interesting producers or simply the ability to make us say, “You need to try this.”

We taste. We research. We ask questions. We learn the stories. And whenever possible, we select things we’ve actually experienced ourselves.

Some are rare.

Some are wonderfully ordinary.

Some are serious bottles meant to be tucked away.

Others are exactly what Tuesday night requires.

The common denominator is that we think they’re worth sharing.

Curated isn’t a shelf aesthetic. It’s doing the homework before you walk through the door.

Cheese & Charcuterie in Red Lodge: More Than 70 Reasons Wine Needs Cheese

Wine and cheese may get a lot of attention around here, but they’re hardly alone.

Babcock & Miles is also a specialty food market filled with ingredients and pantry staples selected to make everyday meals better and ambitious meals possible.

Depending on what has recently captured our attention, you’ll find things like:

Premium olive oils and vinegars.
Pasta, grains and sauces.
Spices and seasonings.
Crackers, preserves and spreads.
Chocolate and sweets.
Specialty ingredients from around the world.
Interesting snacks and provisions.
Locally produced and Montana-made favorites.

Our inventory changes because good discoveries tend to lead to more good discoveries.

If you’re searching for something specific, ask.

If you have no idea what you’re searching for, that works too.

Specialty Foods & Pantry Ingredients for People Who Like to Eat

Proteins & Meal Makers: Something Good for Dinner

Our freezer is stocked with proteins and meal-building ingredients for the nights when you want to cook something delicious without driving to Billings to find it.

Look for locally produced beef, bison, and lamb, along with selections that may include duck, chicken, turkey, sausages and other proteins, plus useful things such as baguettes, puff pastry and filo dough.

Pair them with ingredients from our pantry, grab a bottle of wine (or two), add some cheese and suddenly the question of dinner looks considerably less complicated.

We like that.

Wine, Beer, Bubbles & Zero-Proof Options

Wine may be the star of the show, but it doesn’t have to be what everyone is drinking.

The Market also carries beer, bubbles, and thoughtfully selected nonalcoholic options for dinner, gatherings, gifting, celebrations—or simply because you’d like something interesting in your glass.

Need help choosing?

That remains our favorite part of the job.

A Neighborhood Wine Shop Should Know Its Neighborhood

For us, local is much more than something to put in a description.

Red Lodge is home.

Steve and Kim raised their family here. Kim has spent years contributing her time to community efforts ranging from workforce housing to local emergency medical services, and members of the Babcock & Miles team continue to participate in organizations and efforts that make Red Lodge a better place to live, work, and visit.

You’ll see us around town.

At community events.

At meetings.

At the grocery store.

On Broadway.

Probably when none of us expected to see anyone we know.

That is part of owning a neighborhood business in a small Montana town.

You don’t simply open the doors here. You show up here.

And we’re grateful to be part of it.

Babcock & Miles Wine Club

If one good bottle tends to make you curious about the next one, you may be our kind of person.

The Babcock & Miles Wine Club gives members access to Somm-selected wines chosen for quality, value and discovery, along with Wine Club information, special pricing and opportunities to reorder member selections while they’re available.

Think of it as allowing Somm Steve to do some of your wine shopping for you.

There are worse arrangements.

Gifts, Baskets, Charcuterie Boards & Party Provisions

Good food and wine make particularly useful gifts.

Babcock & Miles can create gift baskets, charcuterie arrangements and party trays built around your occasion, preferences and budget.

Hosting a gathering? Planning a wedding? Need a host gift? Thank-you gift? Housewarming gift? Something for the person who already has everything but fortunately still eats?

We can help.

Please give us at least 72 hours' notice for custom orders whenever possible and let us know about any allergies, preferences, or dislikes.

Babcock & Miles gift cards for both the Market and Wine Bar & Café are also available in any denomination.

And Then There’s Next Door

One of the advantages of having a wine shop and a Wine Bar & Café next door to one another is that the conversation doesn’t have to end when you buy the bottle.

At Babcock & Miles Wine Bar & Café, you can settle in for coffee, breakfast, lunch, dinner, a Somm-selected glass of wine, cocktails, beer and zero-proof options, plus the sandwiches, salads, flatbreads, boards, desserts, and other delectable things coming from our kitchen.

It’s casual.

It’s comfortable.

There’s indoor and outdoor seating.

And when Montana permits, there’s even a rather bougie fire pit.

Shop next door. Stay for a glass. Have something to eat. Find a new wine. Take another bottle home.

We designed the two Babcock & Miles spaces to work together because that’s generally how we think food and wine should work, too.

Get Your Babcock On

For nearly two decades, people have been walking into the little yellow house looking for wine, cheese, ingredients, gifts, advice and something they didn’t know they needed until they saw it.

We’re still here.

Still locally owned.

Still tasting.

Still learning.

Still hunting down delectable things.

And still very happy to help you find something good.
